J.J. Abrams says that Carrie Fisher somehow knew he would direct Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

November 29, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Despite Carrie Fisher passing away before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the beloved actress apparently predicted that J.J. Abrams would return to direct the movie.

Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher passed away before The Last Jedi was released so J.J. Abrams utilised unused footage of Fisher so she could appear in the last movie of the saga.

Fisher, therefore, could never have known that Abrams would return to the series to direct Episode IX but somehow she did. Speaking to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Abrams revealed an eerie message that he found for him in Fisher’s last book:

“I wasn’t supposed to work on this film, and she passed away before The Last Jedi was released. She wrote this book, the last autobiography she wrote was The Princess Diarist, and I remember reading the book and in the end in the special thanks she thanks me at the very end and she says ‘Special thanks to J.J. Abrams for putting up with me twice.’ I had never worked with her before The Force Awakens and I wasn’t supposed to direct Episode IX, and it was a very Carrie thing to write something like that and to somehow know. It was really strange.”

Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
