Bill Sienkiewicz says The New Mutants has a “phenomenal” new trailer

December 23, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Despite numerous rumours suggesting that Disney could be looking to dump 20th Century Fox’s long-delayed The New Mutants direct to a streaming service (or shelve it completely), the Josh Boone-helmed X-Men spinoff is still officially slated for a theatrical release on April 3rd 2020, and if legendary comic book artist Bill Sienkiewicz is to be believed, we may be about to see the (re)launch of the film’s marketing campaign.

“Two days ago, I heard from Josh Boone, the director, and he sent me a new trailer,” Sienkiewicz told Kevin Smith on his Fatman Beyond podcast. “And they’ve been working on it, he’s been working on and everything, and it is phenomenal. I got chills. It looks like, because of the whole Disney-Fox, I don’t even want to call it a merger, takeover, whatever. But it’s got the blessings of Marvel. And it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing but also the horror elements of the film are in place. It’s really, absolutely stellar, just what I’ve seen.”

The New Mutants did get a first trailer back in October 2017 ahead of its original April 2018 release, but was subsequently delayed amid reports that Fox was demanding extensive reshoots, including the insertion of an entirely new character. As far as we know, these reshoots never actually took place, and subsequent (unconfirmed) rumours suggested that Disney and Marvel had put together their own edit, one that is said to have removed any references and ties to Fox’s wider X-Men franchise, allowing the film to be retconned into the Marvel Cinematic Universe should Kevin Feige opt to do so.

Given that the planned release is only a little over three months away, we shouldn’t have too long to wait until we get some confirmation on the film’s status and if and when we’ll actually get to see it.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
