Joker director says sequel must have equal “thematic resonance” to go ahead

January 3, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Todd Phillips, the director of Joker, says that a sequel must have the same “thematic resonance” as the original if it is to go ahead.

Ever since Joker released in 2019, fans have been clamouring for a follow-up movie and with all the money that Joker has raked in at the box office, WB and DC have heard the call.

Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix say that they are open to returning for another movie but the director has some conditions. Speaking to Deadline, Phillips said:

“When a movie does $1 billion and cost $60 million to make, of course it comes up. But Joaquin and I haven’t really decided on it. We’re open. I mean, I’d love to work with him on anything, quite frankly. So who knows? But it would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy. All those things are really what made this movie work for us, so we’d have to have something that had an equal thematic resonance.”

Fingers crossed that the two of them can come up with something that inspires them in the same way that the first movie did. It’s going to be interesting to see how this story progresses.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
