Bong Joon-ho and Adam McKay set to bring Parasite to the small screen with HBO

January 10, 2020 by Matt Rodgers

The 2019 Palme d’Or winning, $130 million worldwide grossing, and absolutely superb Parasite is yet to amaze audiences in the UK, but it has emerged that HBO is in negotiations for a limited series based on one of the most unique movies of modern times.

Deadline report that Bong Joon-ho will work with Adam McKay, and opted for HBO in preference to a slew of other streaming giants who were vying for the TV adaptation from from CJ Entertainment, who were the studio behind the film, McKay’s own Hyperobject Industries and Dooho Choi’s Kate Street Picture Company.

It’s best knowing as little as possible going into Parasite, but it’s essentially about the lengths a poor family will go to attain the nicer things in life, and that’s really over-simplifying the complexities of this brilliant genre mash-up. Currently blazing a trail on the award’s circuit, Bong Joon Ho is hotly tipped to come away with an armful of accolades, including the Academy Award for Best International Feature.

Due for release on February 7th in the UK, you can read our review here. Until then please let us know what you think using the comments section below, or head over to our Twitter page to continue the discussion…

Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.
