While domestic box office business dropped 4%, a $31.1 billion international haul helped boost theatrical receipts to a record $42.5 billion in 2019.
Here’s a look at the studio domestic and international figures for the year, courtesy of Deadline:
| Studio | Domestic Gross | International Gross | Total Gross |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney/Fox (combined) | $4.328B | $8.823B | $13.153B |
| Warner Bros. | $1.582B | $2.850B | $4.423B |
| Universal | $1.519B | $2.152B | $3.671B |
| Sony | $1.346B | $2.005B | $3.351B |
| Paramount | $0.564B | $0.786B | $1.349B |
| Lionsgate | $0.769B | $0.506B | $1.272B |
Unsurprisingly given it managed six billion dollar plus titles before the year end – including the now-biggest film of all-time Avengers: Endgame with $2.798 billion – Disney led the pack with a combined total $13.153 billion, or $11.120 billion if you exclude its acquired Fox titles. The previous record for a studio in a single year was $7.6 billion, again set by Disney back in 2016.
Two non-Disney releases managed to crack the billion dollar mark, with Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home earning $1.132 billion and Warner Bros.’ Joker grossing $1.067 billion – the latter also setting a new record for an R-rated movie.
