The Witcher on track to be Netflix’s biggest first season ever

January 23, 2020 by Samuel Brace

According to Netflix, The Witcher is on track to become the streaming service’s biggest first season of television ever.

It has been clear for some time that Netflix’s The Witcher is a substantial hit, with many enjoying the deep lore, epic visuals, and fascinating tales of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. But just how big is it?

Well, according to Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings (via Variety), the show is on track to be their biggest first season of TV ever. Netflix say that 76 million households watched The Witcher, with the platform defining ‘watched’ as “chose to watch and did watch for at least two minutes.”

This definition is slightly different than their old one, which defined it as “watched 70 percent of a single episode of a series.”

But however you cut it, that’s an incredible amount of people who tuned in to give The Witcher a go. This new methodology, which Netflix compares to Youtube, will ensure that “short and long titles are treated equally, leveling the playing field for all types of our content including interactive content, which has no fixed length.”

Based on the best-selling fantasy series of books, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri. Other cast members include Jodhi May, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Adam Levy, MyAnna Buring, Mimi Ndiweni, Therica Wilson-Read, Emma Appleton, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey, Lars Mikkelsen, Royce Pierreson, Maciej Musiał, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte, and Anna Shaffer.
