Tigers Are Not Afraid’s Issa López to adapt Lost Souls

January 23, 2020 by Matt Rodgers

Deadline has revealed that Tigers Are Not Afraid director Issa López has signed on to write and direct an adaptation of the Matthew Baker short story Lost Souls.

This news should not only fuel excitement for Lopez’s next project, but also act as a reminder that if you’re yet to see Tigers Are Not Afraid, then it should jump straight to the top of your ever-expanding viewing list.

Lost Souls was optioned by Searchlight Pictures and Noah Hawley (TV’s Fargo, Legion, Lucy in the Sky) and tells the story of a pregnant woman who lives in a world where babies are born without souls. She is sent to a wellness center in the middle of the desert, in the hope that it will help her give birth to a healthy child. The short story is one of a number of Baker’s to be optioned by studios, with Hawley’s 26 Keys production company also turning Why Visit America into a pilot for FX.

López, who is currently working on a Guillermo Del Toro produced horror, justifiably won numerous awards for her 2017 fable Tigers Are Not Afraid, which is currently available to stream on Shudder. It tells the fantasy-flecked story of a young orphan girl named Estrella (Paola Lara) who is at the centre of a drug cartel turmoil in a Mexican town.
