The Conjuring 3 writer on how the film will evolve from the haunted house formula

March 26, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While horror fans are highly anticipating the third entry into The Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has teased the film will be different from the first two instalments.

The writer teased the news on Twitter, claiming The Conjuring 3 will evolve the franchise from the standard haunted house formula audiences witnessed in The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2.

“[The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It] is a completely different movie than the first two,” Johnson-McGoldrick shared. “The franchise is expanding beyond the ‘haunted house’ formula.”

The first film saw Ed and Lorraine Warren come to the assistance of the Perron family, who were being terrorised by a supernatural force in their farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971. While in the second film, the Warrens assisted the Hodgson family in a similar scenario to the first film, except it took the paranormal investigators to a house consumed by poltergeists in England in 1977. The new film however is based upon the ‘Devil Made Me Do It’ case, the first known court case in the U.S. where the defense argued innocence due to demonic possession.

“A chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence.”

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and The Conjuring universe creator James Wan. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are set to reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren respectively. The film is currently slated for release on September 11th 2020.
