James Gunn had to fight to cast Dave Bautista as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy

April 8, 2020 by Liam Waddington

After two Guardians of the Galaxy films and appearances in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it is hard to imagine the beloved characters being played by anyone else besides Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel.

However, according to director James Gunn during an impromptu Q&A session on Twitter, he had to fight to cast the WWE superstar-turned-actor Dave Bautista as Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he didn’t specifically reveal why he had to put up a fight to cast Bautista, it seems safe to assume one of the reasons could be down to the actor’s limited filmography beforehand.

“I had to fight for him – and it was the most worthy fight I’ve ever fought. Love and miss you [Dave Bautista],” Gunn stated in a response to a fan.

While Gunn had to battle to cast Bautista, the actor ultimately repaid the favour when he was publicly vocal about Disney and Marvel Studios firing the director from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 in 2018 due to insensitive tweets resurfacing from his past.
