Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad won’t be delayed, says director James Gunn

April 13, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Due to the current global health crisis, many film and television projects have either been delayed or halted production altogether for the foreseeable future. However, according to director James Gunn, neither The Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be impacted by any such delays.

Taking questions on Twitter, Gunn reassured fans that the upcoming The Suicide Squad film for Warner Bros. is currently “on or ahead of schedule” for its 6th August 2021 release date while the plans for the third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel Studios are “exactly the same” as they were before the current situation.

“Right now there’s no reason for ‘The Suicide Squad’ release date to move. We are on or ahead of schedule. We were extremely fortunate to wrap shooting and set up editing from our homes (due to a post production team and studio with foresight) before quarantine,” Gunn said.

In a separate response, Gunn continued to give an update on the status of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – which he won’t be starting production on until The Suicide Squad has wrapped on post-production.

“Right now the plans with ‘Vol. 3’ are also exactly the same as they were before coronavirus,” he said.

Although very little is known about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 right now, it is safe to assume that Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel will all be reprising their roles as Star-Lord, Drax, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot respectively. The film currently doesn’t have a fixed release date as of yet.

The Suicide Squad cast features a returning Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) as well as new DCEU additions Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Jennifer Holland, David Dastmalchian, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, John Cena, Pete Davidson, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Steve Agee, Michael Rooker, and Sean Gunn. The film is set for release on August 6th 2021.
