National Treasure TV series in the works for Disney+

May 11, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While a third movie instalment of National Treasure is still in development, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed a Disney+ TV series is now also in the works.

In a recent interview with Collider, Bruckheimer discussed the future of the National Treasure franchise by announcing a brand new TV series which will feature a younger cast as well as providing an update on the long-awaited National Treasure 3 with the original cast expected to return.

“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

As for director Jon Turtletaub‘s National Treasure 3, which is being penned by Bad Boys for Life writer Chris Bremner, the film is currently still in the writing stage. However, according to Bruckheimer, the Disney+ series is further along in development.

“The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

The first two National Treasure movies, released in 2004 and 2007, were directed by Jon Turteltaub and starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a treasure hunter tracking hidden artefacts and secrets from throughout U.S. history. Cage was joined in the cast of both films by Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Harvey Keitel, Armando Riesco and Jon Voight.

There is no confirmation yet on when the Disney+ series or National Treasure 3 are expected to begin filming.
