Comic book adaptation Sweet Tooth receives series order from Netflix

May 13, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Netflix has ordered a series pick-up of the comic book adaptation Sweet Tooth, a drama based on characters created by Jeff Lemire for the DC Comics Vertigo label.

According to Deadline, the streaming service has ordered eight, one-hour episodes after the project failed to go anywhere after a pilot order by Hulu in 2018. The series is set to be directed by Jim Mickle (Stake Land, Hap and Leonard) and produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey.

Sweet Tooth follows the adventures of Gus — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.

Christian Convery (Beautiful Boy), Nonso Anozie (The Laundromat), Adeel Akhtar (Les Misérables) and Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) star with James Brolin as the voice of the narrator.

Mickle will also write, executive produce and act as co-showrunner on Sweet Tooth alongside Beth Schwartz (Arrow). Producers also include Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, Evan Moore, and Linda Moran.
