It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia becomes the longest-running live-action comedy series with season 15 renewal

May 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia will return for a fifteenth season, breaking records in the process . The record-setting renewal was revealed as part of FX’s original programming slate through 2021, announced on Tuesday.

Last year’s 14th seasons of It’s Always Sunny had tied ABC’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running live-action comedy series. The flagship FX series is now solidifying its place in the TV history books as the sole title holder of the record, with no other comedy coming close.

This news comes just a month after It’s Always Sunny creator and star Rob McElhenney revealing that writing on show’s fifteenth season had begun. McElhenney even hinted that he’d tackle the current global health crisis in an upcoming episode.

It’s Always Sunny, developed by McElhenney and Glen Howerton, was the first comedy hit for FX in 2004. Last year, FX chairman John Landgraf called the comedy “the first successful deconstruction and reconstruction of a sitcom.” He even expressed interest in bringing the show back for one more season as early as January of this year.

The 14th season began last September and came to a close in November; it featured the gang dealing with Airbnb-style house guests, a focus group for a screening of their favorite movie franchise, and a suicidal man threatening to jump off Paddy’s Pub.

At the time of reporting, there’s no date set for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 15.
