Karyn Kusama on removing the “romanticism” from Blumhouse’s upcoming Dracula adaptation

June 9, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Following the success of Universal and Blumhouse Production’s The Invisible Man, it’s not surprising that they are looking to shake things up again with another Universal Monsters adaptation.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Destroyer director Karyn Kusama would helm a new version of Dracula for the studio, and now the filmmaker is opening up about what she plans to bring to the table. Kusama recently spoke with the Stephen King podcast The Kingcast and explained how she plans to keep the adaptation faithful to the Bram Stoker book, but changing one major aspect common to the film versions.

“It’s a fairly faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel,” said the filmmaker. “I think something that gets overlooked in the adaptations of Dracula in the past is the idea of multiple voices. In fact, the book is filled with different points of view. And the one point of view we don’t get access to, and all most adaptations give access to, is Dracula himself. So I would just say in some respect, this is going to be an adaptation called Dracula, but it’s perhaps not the same kind of romantic hero that we’ve seen in the past interpretations of Dracula.”

Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay will pen the script, as Kusama looks to bring the story of Dracula into the modern world. No news on who will play the iconic role, but Sebastian Stan has made it public that he’s interested in the part. With the actor being Romanian by birth and having worked with Karyn Kusama in the past, it seems like a perfect fit.

Are you looking forward to Kusama’s Dracula? Who would you like to see portraying the legendary Count? Let us know in the comments or on social media @FlickeringMyth…
