Mindhunter cinematographer unaware of status of a third season following the series’ indefinite hold

July 6, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Following the release of the second season, it was reported that Netflix had put Mindhunter on indefinite hold due to the busy schedule of executive producer David Fincher and they had released stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv from their contracts. Unfortunately, it sounds like the third season of the crime series remains unlikely to happen at the moment.

In a recent interview with Collider, Mindhunter cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt offered an update on the status on the third season while casting further doubt that the series will continue soon.

“I don’t. I don’t. We just finished this movie [Mank] and I’ve heard things are on hold for a little bit. We’ll see. Who knows?” Messerschmidt said. “But it would be an honour to go back. I love working with David and adore the cast and the crew, and it’s been an incredible period of my life for certain. I’ve been really blessed to have the opportunity to work on it and contribute to it. It’s been particularly important and poignant in my career. But yeah, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on.”

Although Fincher has wrapped on his latest film, Mank, if he can commit to the third season, the future of the series will also be dependent on the schedules and availability of the cast members who were released from their contracts.

Mindhunter follows FBI Agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) as they establish the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit, interviewing imprisoned serial killers to explore how their minds work and put the knowledge to use in solving ongoing cases.

Do you think the third season of Mindhunter will happen at Netflix? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
