Spectre reigns supreme for second week at US box office

It was a case of déjà vu at the North American box office this weekend with Spectre and The Peanuts Movie holding on to first and second place respectively.

The latest James Bond instalment easily batted away the competition to add an extra $35.4 million to its receipts, ensuring a second week on top of the charts. That brings Spectre‘s total ticket sales on the continent to nearly $131 million, while globally Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as the iconic spy is reaching $550 million.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang also demonstrated real staying power with The Peanuts Movie raking in an additional $24.2 million. The animated adaptation of Charles Schulz’s much loved comic strip saw a respectable 45% drop from its opening weekend, indicating positive word of mouth buzz.

Only two new entries managed to crack the top 5 – the Christmas-themed comedy Love the Coopers and Chilean mining drama The 33. Coopers took in $8.4 million and the Antonio Banderas led The 33 registered a debut of $5.8 million. Both films are likely to slide down the rankings fairly swiftly after The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Disney’s The Good Dinosaur hit cinemas.

Despite its very limited release, Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea failed to make much of a dent. Her moody ’70s set drama about a dsyfunctional married couple, in which she stars opposite real-life husband Brad Pitt, clocked less than $96,000 from 10 screens. Its distributor Universal will expand to 100+ sites soon but there are concerns audience sizes may be significantly smaller than hoped for.
