Live-action Static Shock movie announced at DC FanDome

August 23, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Today’s DC FanDome virtual event has delivered plenty of goodies for fans of the DC movie universe, including trailers for The Snyder Cut of Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad character breakdowns and a behind-the-scenes video, concept art from both Black Adam and The Flash, not to mention a few leaked images of Robert Pattinson in The Batman.

That’s not all however, as we now have word on a brand new project in development, with filmmaker Reginald Hudlin revealing during a surprise Milestone Media panel at FanDome that a live-action Static Shock movie is in development as part of a relaunch of the Milestone line of characters.

“One of the things we’re really excited about, we really want to live up to the name of the company, Milestone Media,” said Hudlin. “When we spoke to Jim [Lee] about reviving the Milestone line, we said ‘Look, we all know this has been a hit comic book and hit animated series. It’s time to expand back into all those areas and then some.’ So we’re in serious conversations about, as we’re launching the comic book series, developing the Static Shock movie. That will be a theatrical feature film.”

“What we’re talking about is unbelievable,” Hudlin continued. “We’re also talking to all the other divisions of Warner, for example, the animation department. They make those amazing animated feature films for home entertainment. And we’re talking about doing one of those feature films involving the Milestone characters. We’re also looking at new media, like podcasts, and doing a serious of stories that will be available on podcasts. We will deliver Milestone Media wherever you are, on whatever platform you want.”

Created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle of Milestone Comics, Static is the alter-ego of Virgil Hawkins, an African-American teenager who develops electromagnetic powers and takes up crime-fighting. The character was brought into the DC universe following the closure of the original Milestone, and also headlined the animated series Static Shock which was part of the DC Animated Universe alongside the likes of Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League. It ran for four seasons on Kids WB between 2000 and 2004.
