Disney looking at new Black Widow release date, Pixar’s Soul could go to Disney+

September 15, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

With Warner Bros. wasting little time in pushing back Wonder Woman 1984 following the soft box office performance of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, it seems that Disney and Marvel are now eyeing a similar shift for their next superhero offering, Black Widow.

According to Variety, Disney is likely to delay the Scarlett Johansson-headlined blockbuster, which is currently slated for release on November 6th, having already been pushed back once from its original May 1st date due to the global health crisis.

Should this prove to be the case, then it’s possible it will have a knock on effect for the rest of Marvel’s Phase Four slate, which includes Eternals (February 2021), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 2021), Spider-Man 3 (December 2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (February 2022) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (March 2022).

It seems Black Widow won’t be the only Disney release date shift, as the studio is also said to be looking at a new date for Pixar’s Soul (currently set for November 20th), and is reportedly even considering releasing it direct to the Disney+ streaming service. Disney has already done this on several occasions this year, with Artemis Fowl and The One and Only Ivan made available free to all subscribers and Mulan hitting Premium VOD.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is currently set for release on October 28th in the UK and on November 6th in North America.
