Star Wars: The Force Awakens doubles previous advance ticket sales record

November 21, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already smashing box office records, and with less than a month to go until its release it is being reported that the film has sold a staggering $50 million of advance ticket sales in North America alone. That figure is double the previous record of $25 million, which was set by The Dark Knight Rises back in 2012.

No film has ever opened to more than $100 million in December, with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting $85 million on its opening weekend, but The Force Awakens will comfortably reach that milestone, and must surely have a chance of topping Jurassic World’s $208 million to claim the biggest opening of all time.

Star Wars will also have its eye on Jurassic World’s total global haul of $1.67 billion for the title of the biggest movie of the year, which would place it third in list of the all-time highest grossing movies. But will it have enough in the tank to compete with James Cameron’s two top movies Titanic ($2.19 billion) and Avatar ($2.79 billion)? We shall soon find out…
