Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler says the original cast all agreed that the outline for the sequel’s story is “pretty great”

November 3, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Earlier this year, Disney announced they are developing a long-awaited sequel to the to ’90s cult classic Hocus Pocus, with Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Step Up) serving as director.

Now, in an interview with People, original star Bette Midler shared her praise for the outline of the story for the sequel stating the original cast were all in agreement that it was “pretty great.”

“They presented us with an outline, and after we picked ourselves up off the floor because it’s been 27 years, we looked at it and I think all of us agreed that it was pretty great,” Midler said.

Midler continued to explain that the team is hoping they can enlist more key characters that made that original 1993 film a success.

“We’re trying to see who’s available and who’s still out there and still working and who can come back,” she continued. “Because, a lot of the success of what we did on that picture had to do with the team that was surrounded, had to do with the team that they assembled to make that picture, the people who did the flying and the rigging, the people who did the green screens, the people who did the … I don’t think they called it the green screen in those days. The people who did the hair and makeup, which were all exemplary, the costumers, and the special effects people.”

Although further details on the plot are currently being kept under wraps, we do know the sequel will be written by Workaholics writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy seemingly set to reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters in the sequel.

The original 1993 fantasy comedy was directed by Kenny Ortega and saw Midler, Parker, and Najimy playing three witches who find themselves resurrected in present-day Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween.
