Amy Adams’ The Woman in the Window finally getting a Netflix release

January 8, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Let’s hope that The Woman in the Window is as interesting as its journey to the small-screen, because Amy Adams has been staring through that pane of glass in distribution limbo for almost two years. Well now there’s some light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a Netflix release, which Entertainment Weekly reports will be sometime during the first half of 2021.

Based on A.J. Finn’s best-selling novel, and directed by Pan and Atonement‘s Joe Wright, The Woman in the Window was initially set for release in 2019, only to be caught up in Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, and then suffer negative test-screening feedback from audiences that found the film to be too confusing. Speaking to EW, Wright said “There were some plot-points that people found a bit confusing – I would say possibly too opaque maybe. So we had to go back and clarify certain points, but I think also we tried to make sure we didn’t oversimplify anything and make things too clear.”

After the reshoots were complete, The Woman in the Window was pulled from its 2020 release slot and subsequently purchased by Netflix, where according to the article it will make its long-awaited debut “in the first half of the year”. A film that has suffered its own form of lockdown providing entertainment to an audience for which that has never been more resonant.

When the Russell family moves into the house across the way, they appear to be the perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble and shocking secrets are laid bare. Forced to prove what she saw actually happened, everyone begins to question if what occurred was real or imagined. Is it paranoia or did it happen? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one and nothing is what it seems.

The Woman in the Window features a cast that includes Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Fred Hechinger, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Julianne Moore.
