Mads Mikkelsen says Rogue One: A Star Wars Story production “was a little chaotic”

February 7, 2021 by EJ Moreno

If anyone remembers the production of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, you’ll know it wasn’t an easy experience. The troubled production saw the removal of original director Gareth Edwards and the project was retooled by filmmaker Tony Gilroy.

For many fans, this was a massive blow as they wanted to see what Edwards was cooking up for his original take on a Star Wars film. One person who wasn’t too bothered by the changes however was one of its stars, Mads Mikkelsen.

During a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Another Round actor would say the production did get chaotic but overall praised the experience.

“Some of it was a little chaotic. There was no secret that there was some rewriting in the script while we were doing it. And when you do that… it is obviously very tricky for the actors to know ‘What am I carrying into this room now? I opened the door. I’m not back to what happened before.’ So there was some of that,” says Mikkelsen.

“Having said that, it always felt like a solid story. A young girl lost, [who] doesn’t know where she belongs in the world. Then an Oppenheimer story unfolds. She’s always heard he [Galen] was this, and then she realizes he was that.”

He continues, “And it was quite beautifully written. At the end of the day, the changes that were in the film were not as dramatic as people talk about. It was tweaks, but obviously, if you do it while you’re working, it can be confusing.”

It seems like Mikkelsen saw the positives amongst the chaos, much like viewers did as Rogue One was well received by fans and critics alike. The film would go on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
