Neil Patrick Harris speaks about shooting The Matrix 4

February 18, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

One of the many films which has had to negotiate the global pandemic is the fourth eagerly awaited installment of The Matrix franchise, which has been globe-trotting in order to wrap and meet its December 2021 release date, and one of the new additions to the cast, Neil Patrick Harris, has been speaking about what it was like to shoot The Matrix 4 on-location in Berlin.

The Gone Girl star was talking about his experiences to Variety, revealing that he was surprised that the shoot had been so “intimate“.

“It didn’t feel large because it felt like she was in her sweet spot, which was filming on the fly, filming using natural light,” he continued. “Sometimes you’d sit around for an hour waiting for the clouds to clear, and then you’d quickly film. You’d film pages at a time in 30 minutes and then be done. You would think that a giant movie would be 100% storyboarded, animatics, and we’d be checking off shots. I think she lived that before three times over, and I would suspect that she wants to do things her own way now. It wasn’t often that you felt that you were doing something gigantic because she made it feel very intimate.”

Initially set for release on May 21, 2021, The Matrix 4 (although it officially still remains untitled) was then shunted to 2022, before becoming part of Warner Bros. controversial plans to simultaneously release all of its theatrical slate in theatres and on HBO Max.
