The Falcon and the Winter Soldier director describes the Marvel series as an “emotionally charged” adventure

March 2, 2021 by Liam Waddington

With just one episode of WandaVision remaining, the premiere for Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ is quickly approaching, and now, the director has teased the tone of the series.

In the Spring 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 Magazine (via The Direct), director Kari Skogland described the tone of Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson’s adventure as “fun, lively, emotionally charged.”

“I got to play in a muscular world, as well as in quite a dramatic world…I had to use every bit of muscle I had in terms of the experience I was bringing to the table, not only with action but with the heartfelt drama.”

Skogland isn’t the only member of the creative team who has been discussing the upcoming series as Marvel chief Kevin Feige has recently stated why the studio decided to focus on Sam and Bucky – which originally intended to be the studio’s first Disney+ series before it was delayed.

“Anthony Mackie and Sebastien Stan are spectacular actors which we felt we had to explore their stories and their backstories, or personal stories, enough as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes,” said Feige. “So it was always the thought we’d like to learn more about both of them. In the little interactions they had with each other in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War as friends of a mutual best friend in Captain America. We thought we’d have a fun dynamic, if we ever had that opportunity, we’d watch a whole show with the two of them and Disney+ gives us that opportunity.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier features a cast that includes MCU veterans Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Daniel Bruhl (Zemo) and Georges St-Pierre (Batroc) alongside new additions Wyatt Russell (Overlord), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Adepero Oduye (The Big Short), Desmond Chiam (Now Apocalypse), Miki Ishikawa (The Terror: Infamy) and Noah Mills (The Brave).
