Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer fight it out at the top of the U.S. Box Office

April 26, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Godzilla vs. Kong may have rejuvenated the box office with its $86.6M domestic haul, but it was time for the two warring titans to step aside atop the charts this week as Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train delivered a one-two punch that resulted in the biggest grossing weekend since the pandemic began.

Mortal Kombat was yet another win for Warner Bros. as it took the top spot with a $22.5M haul. An R-rating, mixed reviews, and the simultaneous streaming factor made this quite an impressive feat for the videogame adaptation. It might have been a significantly larger figure had it not been for the surprise performance of Demon Slayer The Movie, which took in $19.5M in almost half the amount of screens as Mortal Kombat, which arguably makes it the true winner of the weekend. Already a huge overseas hit, the cult action-anime is the highest grossing movie of all time in Japan, and has now made $407M worldwide.

Godzilla vs. Kong continued to trade blows in third place, adding $4.2M in its fourth weekend for a global cume of $400M, while Bob Odenkirk action flick Nobody only dropped 25%, despite recently being made available on VOD, for a domestic total of $21.7M. Raya and the Last Dragon, in its eighth week on the chart, was also a strong indicator that people are ready to return to the movies, because despite still being available at a premium price on Disney+, the animated adventure still managed to eke out $1.7M domestically, for a $39.8M total, and a $111M global tally.

The full chart can be found over at Box Office Mojo.

“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; Matilda Kimber as Emily Young; Laura Brent as Allison Young; and Daniel Nelson as Kabal.
