Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard in talks for Monsterverse return

April 30, 2021 by EJ Moreno

As the hit film Godzilla vs. Kong crosses the $400 million mark globally, director Adam Wingard looks to be gearing up for more monster mayhem.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Wingard is in talks to return for another entry into the kaiju-focused MonsterVerse franchise. If a deal is closed, it will mark the first time a director has returned to helm another movie in the Monsterverse. Previous directors include Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island), and Michael Dougherty (Godzilla: King of the Monsters).

Wingard slowly gaining more clout in the film industry, with Godzilla vs. Kong scoring him two new directing gigs. Wingard will have the task of bringing the iconic cartoons Thundercats to live-action and will also helm a Face/Off sequel at Paramount. Warner Bros hopes that scoring him for another Monsterverse film will land them similar success to his first attempt.

While only scoring 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong has proven to be a box-office juggernaut, becoming the best performing film in the pandemic era. Even with theatre closures and limited capacities worldwide, the film is still the second-best performance in the MonsterVerse franchise. Only 2017’s Kong: Skull Island stands ahead of it with a total box office of $566 million.

While there are no reports on what Wingard will helm for his second entry in this franchise, sources report that he’s interested in a Son of Kong project. Could we see more of the giant ape battling monsters? Only time will tell…

Legends collide in “Godzilla vs. Kong” as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans—instigated by unseen forces—is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Blair Witch) and sees Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox) reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while new additions to the MonsterVerse include Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Rebecca Hall (Holmes and Watson), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Shun Oguri (Crows Zero), Lance Reddick (The Wire) and Kaylee Hottle.
