The Venture Bros. animated film coming to HBO Max

May 12, 2021 by Ricky Church

Go Team Venture! After the untimely cancellation of the series’ eighth season last year, WarnerMedia has announced the beloved cult animated series The Venture Bros. will return in a straight-to-streaming HBO Max feature film from Adult Swim. Along with Venture Bros., Adult Swim will develop two other animated features for Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocalypse.

Premiering in 2003 with a pilot and the series proper in 2004, The Venture Bros. followed the Venture family – Dr. Venture and his two sons Hank and Dean – and their bodyguard Brock Samson as they travelled the world in a variety of ‘get rich’ quick prospects from Dr. Venture while fending off their self-appointed archnemesis The Monarch and other supervillains. The series was a parody of classic cartoons such as Johnny Quest, G.I. Joe and many other genres. It starred the voices of James Urbaniak, Christopher McCulloch, Michael Sinterniklaas, Doc Hammer and Patrick Warburton.

McCulloch, who is also the series creator, and Doc Hammer were in the middle of writing the eighth and final season when it was cancelled as a result of WarnerMedia’s merger with AT&T. Adult Swim, however, said they were looking for other options to continue it and give Venture Bros. a proper send off. While it is not stated if the feature will serve as the finale to the series, it will be released on Blu-ray/DVD, PVOD and other digital media for a 90 day window before moving onto HBO Max and Adult Swim. The same will happen with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocalypse features.

“Leveraging the power of WarnerMedia allows us to deliver original content to our amazingly dedicated and not-shy fans, while also giving our talented series creators an opportunity to tell stories in new and interesting ways,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim.

The official synopsis for The Venture Bros. feature reads “Doc’s latest invention will either bankrupt the Ventures or launch them to new heights, as Hank searches for himself, Dean searches for Hank, The Monarch searches for answers, and a mysterious woman from their pasts threatens to bring their entire world crashing down on them.”
