Tomb Raider 2 director shares script update, teases title

May 17, 2021 by Ricky Church

Though the Tomb Raider sequel starring Alicia Vikander was delayed indefinitely earlier this year, director Misha Green (Lovecraft Country), who boarded the sequel a few months ago, has given an update for the upcoming follow-up as well as a title tease.

Tomb Raider 2 was originally slated for a March 2021 release, but obviously with the global health crisis production got pushed back for a release this year before getting delayed indefinitely. Green revealed on Twitter that though she is “still on a long journey to production”, the first draft of the script, which she has also written, has been completed. Additionally, she has teased the sequel’s title as Tomb Raider: Obsidian, though that has not been approved yet by MGM.

The 2018 Tomb Raider starred Vikander as a young Lara Croft who goes in search for her missing father on a mysterious island. She discovers a dangerous and secretive organization named Trinity is behind is disappearance and searching for rare and powerful artefacts around the world, giving her a larger mission to stop them and setting up further adventures.

Although 2018’s Tomb Raider movie – which was met with a mixed critical and fan response – took inspiration from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game reboot, as the film is potentially going through a re-write, there has been no confirmation whether Green’s sequel will adapt elements from the game’s sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, when she was initially announced as director Green did say the latter sequels were her favourites from the new set of Tomb Raider games while hinting we could also see elements from the classic series introduced.

The Tomb Raider sequel isn’t the only project fans have to look forward to as Netflix and Legendary are developed an anime series based on the franchise that will “chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest and greatest adventure as she continues to explore new territory.”
