A Quiet Place Part II screams to $58.5 million at the box office as Cruella steals a decent haul

May 31, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

It really was worth the wait when it comes to John Krasinski’s follow-up to his 2018 smash-hit A Quiet Place, both in terms of the critical reception (91% on Rotten Tomatoes including a ★★★★ review from us) and the audience reaction, which has resulted in an estimated 4-day Memorial Day weekend haul of $58.5M.

The heartening pandemic-era North American gross for A Quiet Place Part II exceeded all expectations, with experts originally predicting an opening in the mid-30s for the oft-delayed horror sequel. Paramount’s decision to hold-fire when it came to a theatrical release appears to have paid off, and it will interesting to see what kind of multiplier the film gets in coming weeks.

During a weekend in which the top 10 movies grossed over $100M for the first time in over a year, there was further good news delivered by Disney’s Emma Stone starring origin story Cruella (read our ★★★★ here), which is projected to steal $26.5M. An impressive figure in the shadow of A Quiet Place Part II‘s performance, one which makes it feel like a proper summer blockbuster weekend, and add to that the fact that the film is available at a premium price on Disney+.

Elsewhere in the chart Spiral continued to bleed out with $2.9M and a $19.8M cume, while Jason Statham’s Wrath of Man took its total to $22.1M after four-weeks of release.

The next big challenger for A Quiet Place Part II will be Fast and the Furious sequel F9, which opens on June 25, and over the weekend saw its international total race to a whopping $229M.

The full box-office chart can be found over at BoxOfficeMojo.
