Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was completely rewritten “from scratch” after Sam Raimi’s hiring

June 10, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

15 years on from Spider-Man-3, director Sam Raimi makes his return to the Marvel universe next year with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the fan-favourite filmmaker having stepped in as a late replacement for Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson who left the project due to creative differences with Marvel Studios.

Derrickson was originally set to reunite with his regular writer C. Robert Cargill on the Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel, but it seems the duo’s ideas were completely tossed out following Raimi’s appointment, with Loki head writer Michael Waldron brought in to rework things “from scratch”.

“How do we just make a movie in two months?” said Waldron when speaking to Vanity Fair about being approached by Kevin Feige to handle rewriters. “But COVID quickly descended upon us. We’re not shooting now until November. So I got to spend my 2020 on Zooms with Sam Raimi. Not too bad.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has now wrapped filming, and we’ll find out in March 2022 what Raimi and Waldron have cooked up for the Sorcerer Supreme.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is being directed by Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) as well as Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) as America Chavez.
