We Can Be Heroes 2 begins filming next year, says director Robert Rodriguez

August 31, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Back in January, Netflix announced that a sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s superhero kids movie We Can Be Heroes was currently in development at the streaming service, and now, Rodriguez has provided an update on the project after months of silence.

In an interview with Collider, Rodriguez – who wrote, directed and produced We Can Be Heroes – revealed that the upcoming sequel will begin filming sometime next year as well as sharing his excitement about making another superhero movie aimed at a younger audience.

“Oh, absolutely. I love making those films. They’re so creative. The adults have a great time too. Most of the adults in the cast had kids too that couldn’t watch any of their movies. So it’s a great building of a world. My own children work on the films. So it’s like a family affair. It’s family time. You’re making products for other families, and you’re checking all the boxes, living the best life.”

The film, which itself is a sequel to Rodriguez’s Spy Kids franchise and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, follows a group of super-powered children whose superhero parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders, leaving it up to them to save their parents and the world.
