Lashana Lynch joins Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu in The Woman King historical epic

September 5, 2021 by Ricky Church

Lashana Lynch (No Time To Die) will star opposite Viola Davis (The Suicide Squad) and Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad) in the upcoming historical epic The Woman King from TriStar Pictures and The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Woman King is “inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.”

Lynch is set to play “a charming veteran warrior” alongside Davis’ general and Mbedu’s recruit.

“Lashana is next-level dope,” said Prince-Bythewood. “Not just her incredible chops, but who she projects to the world.  She embodies these true-life warriors and we are so lucky she is coming to play.”

Dana Stevens (Fatherhood) wrote the script with the current draft of the film co-written between her and Prince-Bythewood. The film will be produced by Davis and Julius Tennon through their company JuVee Productions, Cathy Schulman for Welle Entertainment, Maria Bello for Jack Blue and Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi for TriStar.
