Bryce Dallas Howard directing female-led reboot of Flight of the Navigator for Disney+

September 16, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Flight of the Navigator is one of those cherished childhood VHS vehicles which has been the subject of sequel and reboot rumours for longer than David Freeman was abducted in the 1986 family film, but now it appears to have finally landed at Disney+, with Bryce Dallas Howard producing and directing a female-led reboot.

Deadline report that Dallas Howard, who has the credentials when it comes to directing beloved science-fiction properties, having helmed two episodes of The Mandalorian, as well as one from the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett, is attached to direct and produce Flight of the Navigator for Disney+. The article also notes that this reboot will have a female lead.

Flight of the Navigator follows a 12-year-old boy (played by Joey Cramer) who is abducted by a UFO, reappearing at exactly the same age eight years later, with no memories of his experiences. When NASA spots a connection between the boy and a recovered UFO, the youngster escapes in the ship and sets off to reunite with his family and unravel the mystery. Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Veronica Cartwright, the film grossed $18,564,613 at the domestic box-office, but has garnered a nostalgia fuelled following in the intervening years.

One of many reboots in production over at Disney (see The Rocketeer), what do you think about Flight of the Navigator taking to the skies again? Let us know by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth….
