Comic Book Review – Detective Comics #27

January 9, 2014 by admin

Robb Ghag reviews Detective Comics #27…

“Don’t miss a modern-day retelling of The Dark Knight’s origin by the incredible team of writer Brad Meltzer and artist Bryan Hitch! Plus, all-new stories by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, Peter J. Tomasi and Guillem March, Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, Gregg Hurwitz and Neal Adams, new art by legendary Batman writer/artist Frank Miller and more!

Also in this issue, John Layman and Jason Fabok kick off the new storyline “GOTHTOPIA”! It’s a bright, shiny, happy place where dreams come true…as long as you don’t look at things too closely.”
It all began in Detective Comics #27, in May of 1939. For 75 years Batman has been fighting crime, solving mysteries and becoming the talisman of the superhero world.

What better way to start of 2014 then with the “Mega-Sized” Anniversary of the comic that changed it all. This is definitely the book to get, and I do mean book. With 6 variant covers from such great talents as Frank Miller, Jim Lee and Greg Capullo, seven different stories included, and a special word from award winning writer Brad Meltzer, this “issue” contains everything a “Bat-Fan” needs.

The covers are all fantastic, I went with the Frank Miller (simply because I love Frank Miller) but Capullo’s homage cover is definitely a nod to 1989’s Batman Film, and looks awe inspiring in its simplicity.

The Gothtopia storyline begins here for the regular readers of Detective Comics, and again John Layman and John Fabok deliver a fantastic piece which will crossover into the other bat books.

One Shot stories from Scott Snyder, Peter Tomasi, Greg Hurwitz and Brad Meltzer are fantastic and fit perfectly with the tone of the book, as does the pinup artwork throughout.

When you think of Batman, there are so many images which can come to your mind, from any of the fantastic films, to animated series, to campy television shows from the 60’s or the thought of a Batman / Superman showdown coming to the big screen. For me, it will always be Batman, with a criminal in tow, swinging from the rooftops, the cover to Detective Comics #27, the one that started it all.
