Edgar Wright says Baby Driver 2 script is finished but he may not return as director

November 5, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Following the release of his new psychological horror film Last Night in Soho, director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) has provided an update on the highly-anticipated sequel to 2017’s Baby Driver.

In a recent interview for Interview Magazine with No Time to Die director Cary Joji Fukunaga, Wright confirmed that a script is written for the sequel but he may not return as director as he would need to find a way to make the project fun for himself.

“If I did the sequel – and in fact I’ve already written a script – I’d have to find a way to make it fun for me. The idea of doing a straight Xerox is just not interesting because, as you know, these films take at least two years and in our cases, because of the pandemic, they took even longer. My rule of thumb is you have to really want to do it. We’ve both been in situations where we have walked away from a studio franchise movie because we weren’t feeling it. I know that we share many things in common, and that’s one of them.”

Baby Driver follows Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver seeking freedom from a life of crime with his girlfriend Debora, played by Lily James. However, Wright has provided any substantial plot details regarding the possible sequel except previously teasing that the sequel will “take the story further” and will introduce new characters.
