First-look concept art teases Netflix and Legendary’s live-action Gundam movie

November 15, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Having brought the Eighth Wonder of the World into the MonsterVerse for Legendary Pictures with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, it was announced earlier this year that director Jordan Vogt-Roberts would be reuniting with the studio to tackle its live-action adaptation of the iconic anime franchise Gundam.

The project has been in the works since 2018, with Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) penning the script, and with Netflix securing the rights to the movie it appears it is now starting to pick up some real steam as Legendary has teased fans with a piece of first-look concept art featuring the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam mecha suit engulfed in flames.

Launching in 1979 with the Sunrise anime Mobile Suit Gundam, the Gundam franchise takes place in the Universal Century, where a population crisis has led humanity to emigrate to space colonies. However, when one of the colonies, the Principality of Zeon, declares independence from Earth, war breaks out, fought with giant mechas known as Gundam.

At this point, there’s no word as to when we can expect the Gundam movie, and it’s unclear whether it will go into production ahead of Vogt-Roberts’ long-gestating Metal Gear Solid movie, which cast Oscar Isaac in the role of Solid Snake back in December of last year.
