Quentin Tarantino names Mad Max: Fury Road as his favorite movie of 2015

December 24, 2015 by Justin Cook

Those who have chosen Mad Max: Fury Road as their favorite film of 2015 just so happen to have some pretty nice company, as legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino feels the same way.

On the red carpet for the international release of The Hateful Eight, French outlet Première asked Tarantino what he thought was the best film of the year. Despite admitting that he hasn’t seen as many films as he normally does, due to being so busy with his newest project, after thinking about it for a moment he replied, “It would have to be the Mad Max movie, Fury Road.”

The director continued, “I got a print of Mad Max on 35mm and I watched it in my house, and I had it all weekend and I ended up watching it three different times, and I resisted seeing it for a while because I was like, ‘Mad Max without Mel Gibson? Forget that!’ In a world where Mel Gibson exists, how can you cast Tom Hardy? So, I even wanted to get all defiant about it and #NotMyMax. Then I saw the movie and, ‘Okay, it’s terrific,’ and he’s pretty good in it, I have to admit.”

Mad Max: Fury Road has understandably been one of the more popular choices for the best film of the year. Both critics and fans loved the fast-paced, action-heavy fourth entry in the Mad Max series, which became a modest box office hit as well. In fact, to many’s surprise, the film has been doing nicely in awards season, garnering a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama and receiving several other honors and awards.

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

The Hateful Eight opens in the States on Christmas Day and in the UK on January 8th, with a cast that includes James Parks, Zoe Bell, Dana Gourrier, Keith Jefferson, Lee Horsley, Craig Stark, Belinda Owino, Channing Tatum and Gene Jones.
