Michael Keaton reprising Batman role for Batgirl movie

December 23, 2021 by Gary Collinson

When it was first announced that Michael Keaton would be returning as Batman for Warner Bros. and DC Films’ multiverse-hopping The Flash movie, reports were circulating that his casting wasn’t being viewed as a “one and done”, and that he could even be in contention to succeed/replace Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight of the DC Extended Universe.

Well, it seems that may indeed be the case, as Warner Bros. has revealed the official cast and credits for the upcoming HBO Max Original Batgirl movie, which lists Keaton among its cast. Note the inclusion of long time Batman producer Michael E. Uslan (who was instrumental in bringing Tim Burton’s original film to the screen and receives an executive producer credit on all movies featuring the Dark Knight), which confirms that Batman (or Bruce Wayne, at least) will be making an appearance.

The listing also confirms that Batgirl is still be targeted as an HBO Max Original, unlike fellow DC movie Blue Beetle which was announced as such but has just been shifted to a theatrical release.

Keaton will star alongside Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon, while J.K. Simmons reprises his Justice League role as Barbara’s father, GCPD Commissioner Jim Gordon. Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) will play the villain Firefly, with Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life) also on board in an as-yet-unrevealed role.

Batgirl began production earlier this month under directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life). As yet, there’s no word on a release date.
