The Lost City finds $31 million to topple The Batman at the box office

March 28, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

The Lost City managed to find more than expected at the box-office over the weekend, with the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum feel-good action adventure grossing an impressive $31M.

Free of IP or a built-in franchise audience, The Lost City was relying on two bankable stars in an old-fashioned Romancing The Stone style adventure to bring in an audience.

With the backing of positive word-of-mouth (read our review ★★★ here) and the proven comedic chops of Bullock and Tatum, it was enough for it to deny The Batman a fourth week of looming over the chart, and exceed industry expectations, which had it pegged somewhere in the mid-20s.

It’s the second win of 2022 for Tatum, whose directorial debut Dog is still wagging its tail as it approaches $60M domestically, and adds to Bullock’s impressive list of comedy hits at the box-office, which include similar opening weekends for the likes of The Heat ($39M) and The Proposal ($33M).

Even though it is all doom-and-gloom in the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, its fourth-week performance was anything but that. Taking $20.5M, the Warner Bros.’ blockbuster only fell a very decent -44.2% from the previous weekend. This took its total to $332M in North America alone, which combined with a new international tally of $340.9M, means that the Robert Pattinson franchise starter now sits at $672.9M worldwide.

Elsewhere there was a brilliant start for A24’s critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All At Once (read our review ★★★★★ here), with the Michelle Yeoh headlined multiverse movie making a hefty $509,659 from just 10 cinemas.

As always, you can check out the full chart over at BoxOfficeMojo.
