Sydney Sweeney on joining Sony’s Marvel universe with Madame Web

April 8, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Last month it was announced that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is joining Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with the actress signing on for an as-yet-unrevealed role alongside Dakota Johnson in the studio’s Marvel Comics adaptation Madame Web.

Speaking to Variety this past weekend, Sweeney – whose star has been on the rise lately with roles in HBO’s Euphoria and The White Lotus and Amazon’s erotic thriller The Voyeurs – has been talking about her excitement over the project and her preparation for her mystery role.

“I’ve been ordering a bunch of comic books,” states Sweeney. “There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a really big fan of all of the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. I’ve grown up watching them all and I’ve been engulfed in the entire world my entire life, so being able to be a part of that is such an incredible, incredible thing.”

Although she wasn’t giving anyway any character details, Sweeney went on to talk about what she’s looking for in her roles at this stage in her career, adding that: “I like to try and find characters that are challenging for me in multiple different ways, and are completely different from one another. I want to continue to shock people with the characters that I play when they don’t expect that I would choose that next.”

Madame Web is being directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones), with Dakota Johnson in the title role as Cassandra Webb, an ally of Spider-Man who possesses powerful psychic abilities due to a neurological condition which also leaves her connected to a life support device shaped like a spider web.

The film will serve as part of Sony’s shared Marvel universe alongside Venom, the just-released Morbius (which managed to shake off negative reviews to open with a respectable $84 million this past weekend), and the Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led Kraven the Hunter, which is currently in production ahead of a January 2023 release.
