Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel officially greenlit

April 26, 2022 by Ricky Church

You don’t have to worry about who you’re going to call as Sony has officially greenlit a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife during their panel at CinemaCon.

Directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife followed the grand-children of Egon Spengler as they and their mother moved to his farm in a small country town. They quickly discover Egon moved there for a purpose as mysterious and paranormal things begin happening around the town and it’s up to them to uphold their grandfather’s Ghostbusters legacy.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife performed well at the box office, grossing $204 million worldwide. Much of the film’s praise went to McKenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler, Paul Rudd as her teacher Gary Grooberson and the rest of the cast. It also included cameos from the original Ghostbusters stars Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz) with Bob Gunton (The Shawshank Redemption) stepping in for Harold Ramis’ ghostly Egon.

The film served as something of a family affair and passing of the torch as Jason Reitman continued his father’s franchise while Ivan Reitman produced. While it has yet be announced, Jason Reitman will likely return to the director’s chair while Ivan Reitman sadly passed away a couple months ago.

From writer and director Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the next chapter in the Ghostbusters universe and follows a single mother and her two children who arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman and stars Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame), Bokeem Woodbine (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Celeste O’Connor (Wetlands), Oliver Cooper (Mindhunter) and newcomer Logan Kim, along with returning Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett), and Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz).
