Hasbro responds to Star Wars Monopoly controversy, Rey to be added in future edition

January 6, 2016 by Gary Collinson

On Monday, Hasbro found themselves at the centre of a controversy surrounding the latest iteration of Star Wars Monopoly, stemming from the fact that Daisy Ridley’s character Rey is absent from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens edition, despite her being the main protagonist of the movie.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, a Hasbro spokesperson defended the omission, stating that: “The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie’s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance. Fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6-inch and 12-inch Rey action figures. We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines.”

Well, it that Hasbro has now taken note of the #WheresRey outcry, as they have confirmed that Rey will be added to a future edition of the board game: “We love the passion fans have for Rey, and are happy to announce that we will be making a running change to include her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game available later this year.”
