Warner Bros. deactivates DC’s Wonder Twins movie

May 19, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It’s been speculated for weeks now that Warner Bros.’ approach to its DC Entertainment content is set for a major shake-up following the completion of the AT&T and Discovery merger, and now it seems we have our first DC casualty of the new Warner Bros. Discover era.

Despite having just set KJ Apa (Riverdale) and Isabel May (1883) as its leads last month, Warner Bros. has decided to pull the plug on Wonder Twins, the planned HBO Max original movie from DC Films.

Based on the characters who debuted in Hanna-Barberea’s All-New Super Friends House, the film would have seen Apa and May taking on the roles of Zan and Jayna, alien siblings from the planet Exxor who – along with their pet monkey Gleek – put their powers to use on Earth as superheroes. Black Adam screenwriter Adam Sztykiel was set to direct from his own script, with filming due to have got underway in Atlanta this summer.

Although there’s been no official comment on the reasons for the cancellation, it is believed that new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is looking to scrap plans for a series of HBO Max original movies in favour of increasing Warner Bros.’ theatrical slate, and with a $75 million budget, Wonder Twins was simply too expensive for its limited potential returns.

Are you disappointed that Wonder Twins isn’t moving ahead? Would you like to see Zan and Jayna appearing elsewhere in the DC Multiverse? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
