Golden Globe winner The Revenant opens to $38 million

January 11, 2016 by admin

Now officially released nationwide following a small-release last week, Golden Globe winner and Oscar contender The Revenant has opened to $38 million domestically.

The film exceeded many expert expectations, with the film facing competition from newcomer The Forest and the box office juggernaut Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Not only that but Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight was expending to more cinema screens (although that didn’t work out well).

The Revenant is the fourth biggest opening of Leonardo DiCaprio’s career, showing that there is still life in his drawing power. It’s also the fifth biggest January opening of all-time, and the film earned an extra $20.2 million from nine other markets to bring its total to $58.2 million.

Next weekend will be the film’s real test. It will likely be nominated for several awards at The Oscars this coming Thursday, and this often helps the opening weekend drop-off. Last Year, American Sniper dropped only 27% following its record-breaking opening, but that did have a better CineaScore rating.

The film won several awards at last night’s Golden Globes including Best Director and Best Actor.
