John Romero releases his first new DOOM level in 21 years

January 16, 2016 by Kris Wall

John Romero, the co-creator of DOOM has created his first new level in the game for 21 years.

It's been 21 years since I made a DOOM level. Here's my version of E1M8 using DOOM1.WAD. https://t.co/ueKM7gBbXd pic.twitter.com/NlmA9aIALN

— John Romero 🤘🏽 (@romero) January 15, 2016

The stage has been titled Tech Goes Bad and Romero has said in his accompanying notes that the new stage has been designed for single player, co-op and deathmatch games. He also referred to the new stage as ‘a warm up’, which suggests Romero could be working on something new.

Romero further added on his Twitter feed that the new stage took him ‘several hours over the last two weeks. Here’s a description of the new map from the man himself;

“After exiting the Computer Station you knew the worst was up ahead. You still hadn’t reached the place where the demons were coming from. The steel door shuts behind you as you realise you’re there; you’re at the Phobos Anomaly. Cracks from hell are all over the place as seepage from the portal invades the entire installation. Now it’s time to find the portal and stop the demons from coming through. You know UAC had hundreds of scientists working at a high-tech lab somewhere.”
