HBO Max’s Dune: The Sisterhood begins production

November 24, 2022 by Ricky Church

Dune fans have a lot to look forward to as not only is Denis Villeneuve is currently filming Dune: Part Two, but production on the HBO Max spin-off series Dune: The Sisterhood has officially begun production.

Based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s Sisterhood of Dune, the series takes place 10,000 years prior to Paul Atreides, and serves as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s feature film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel.

Dune: The Sisterhood director Johan Renck, who directed HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl, announced production had begun on his Instagram account.

“Through machinations taking place millenia before the story you all know,” Renck said, “we descend into the coven that one day shall be named the Bene Gesserit. Say it with me: ‘I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.'”

Dune: The Sisterhood follows “the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.”

The prequel series has been created for television by Diane Ademu-John (Empire, The Haunting of Bly Manor), who serves as co-showrunner alongside Alison Schapker (Westworld). Denis Villeneuve is also on board as an executive producer alongside Johan Renck, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, Cait Collins and Brian Herbert.

Dune: The Sisterhood will star Emily Watson (Chernobyl), Shirley Henderson (See How They Run) and Indira Varma (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi), Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (The Colony), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist), Faoileann Cunningham (The Northman), Aoife Hinds (Hellraiser), Chloe Lea (Foundation) and Travis Fimmel (Vikings).
