It’s a big year for 20th Century Fox and its superhero movies. First up out of the gate is the R-rated Deadpool, followed by Bryan Singer’s latest X-Men adventure X-Men: Apocalypse – the first instalment in the “rebooted” timeline following the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
During a fan Q&A, writer-producer Simon Kinberg has been discussing the new X-Men ensemble, calling it the biggest X-Men film to date, owing to Apocalypse’s (Oscar Isaac) “extinction-level threat to the world.”
“I think in some ways it’s the biggest X-Men film we’ve ever done,” states Kinberg. “We’ve never done one of these movies where the whole world — there’s like an extinction-level threat to the world. The whole world’s at stake… [Apocalypse] is more interested in the sort of survival of the fittest. The strongest, no matter what they may be, surviving and making essentially a better world.”

Kinberg also went on to touch upon the new timeline, stating that: “We did something kind of radical and crazy in Days of Future Past where we created a new timeline. We sort of broke the established timeline of the movies that had been X1, 2, 3 forward, and we created a new sort of history for the X-Men. Now that we’ve created that history, we take that to be canon. We take it to be law, and so it’s really important that we continue to tell those stories…knowing that really the only destination, ultimately, is the little glimpse into the Xavier mansion at the end of Days of Future Past in the future part.”
Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 19th, 2016 in the UK and May 27th, 2016 in the States.
