The Lord of the Rings’ Bernard Hill ruthlessly shades The Rings of Power: “It’s a money-making venture”

December 4, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Even though The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set millennia before Peter Jackson’s trilogy, Bernard Hill says he wouldn’t even be a part of it if they asked.

The actor, known to genre fans for his role in The Lord of the Rings as King Theoden of Rohan, recently sat down for an interview with Metro. In his chat with the publication, the well-regarded Hill held nothing back. During the conversation, Metro asked if Hill had seen Amazon Prime’s eight-episode series, and he held nothing back.

Hill shuts down that question and finds time to shade the series. “No, not interested. It’s a money-making venture, and I’m not interested in watching that or being in it,” says the legendary actor. “Good luck to them and all that stuff, but it’s not like the real thing.”

Hill was then pressed if he believed the series should’ve ended with the original Peter Jackson trilogy, and his answer was just as candid.

“Completely, yes. I think they were pushing it when they made The Hobbit. The Hobbit’s a tiny book. They did it well – they did it really, really well. They expanded it [but] I think you can only stretch a piece of elastic so far. I think they managed it in The Hobbit because there were some really good things in The Hobbit, without a doubt.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is currently in production on its second season. What have you made of the show? Do you agree with Hill’s assessment? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is streaming now on Prime Video.
