The Upside Down heads to Japan for Stranger Things anime spinoff

December 29, 2022 by EJ Moreno

It seems that Netflix and The Duffer Brothers are taking Stranger Things outside of Hawkins as according to What’s on Netflix, the streamer is reportedly working on an anime series titled Stranger Things Toyko.

There are few details concerning the series, but the site offers a brief synopsis: “An encounter with the Upside Down evolves into a grand adventure for video game-loving twin brothers living on the outskirts of 1980s Tokyo.” The project will reportedly run around six hours, though it is not confirmed how many episodes it will run.

The Duffer Brothers have long teased the project. Matt Duffer did say earlier this year on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that any spin-off would have a “story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

Stranger Things Toyko marks the first spin-off of the highly-popular Netflix series. As the main show ends with its upcoming Season 5, the streamer and Duffers will obviously want to keep this gold mine alive.

The Stranger Things anime is part of The Duffer Brothers’ deal with Netflix. Upside Down Pictures is working on more Stranger Things, as well as an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman and the anime series Death Note.

Stranger Things is streaming now on Netflix.
