James Marsden speaks about Westworld cancellation: “We had plans to finish it the way we wanted to”

January 4, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

At the end of last year HBO announced that they would be closing the gates to Westworld forever and removing the show from their streaming services, leaving viewers who were hoping for a fifth and final season that would answer the multitude of questions posed by showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, extremely disappointed.

Well, James Marsden is on the same page, and has been speaking about how it would have “been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish”.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, the X-Men actor, who played kind-hearted gun-slinger Teddy Flood in the HBO series, revealed his sadness at the cancellation by saying “I’d be lying to you if I told you that the way we ended Westworld wasn’t a disappointment,” adding “I’m never going to speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish.”

It has since been revealed that Westworld creators Joy and Nolan declined to make a fifth season with a smaller budget, which plays into Marsden’s follow-up comment that while he “totally understands it’s an expensive show and big shows have to have big audiences to merit the expense” he wished the decision was “about more than financial success,”.

On a note of optimism befitting his character in the show, Marsden did add “maybe there’s some world where it can get completed somehow. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted to.”

Westworld was based on Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s 1973 film, and followed a group of highly-intelligent androids called ‘Hosts’ as they catered to the needs of their human guests in an immersive theme park. The big-budget series starred an impressice ensemble cast led primarily by Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, James Marsden and Aaron Paul, while Anthony Hopkins played a lead role in the superb first season.
